A Tamagotchi Version 4 walkthrough/guide!
I am going to go in depth with the Tamagotchi V4 as well as I can! I will first start out with the Icons.
The first Icon is the Health Meter, you should know it already because all Tamagotchis have it! When Tamagotchi beeps you can go here to see what he or she needs. Scrolling through the screens, you can view its Hunger and Happiness levels (the more black filled hearts the better); Training levels (the more black bars the better); Skill Points; Age, Weight and Name; Gender and Generation number; Gotchi Points; and your User Name. Skill points are divided into 3 groups - Intelligence, Fashion (or Arts), and Kindness (or Social). Skill points have effects on the type of character you get and the job your tamagotchi is given.
The Icon next to that is the Food Icon. You go here to feed Tamagotchi when it is hungry. Meal choices are Scone, Sushi, Bread and Cereal. Snacks are Cone, Pudding, Tart and Orange. These meals and snacks are always available, multi-use and free. Other meals and snacks purchased from the shop or on TamaTown are also stored in here. They are not usually free (although some may be given as prizes or gifts) and are one-use. You can hold a maximum of 15 meals and 15 snacks. Each meal you feed your tamagotchi fills one Hungry heart on the the Hunger meter and increases its weight by 1 lb, whilst each snack fills one Happiness heart and increases its weight by 2 lb (unless it has 3 stars on its health fortune cookie - and it then only gains 1 lb). The next Icon over is the Flush Icon. Go here to clean up after Tamagotchi when he has pooped. You can also use the icon to put Tamagotchi on the toilet if you can catch him before he goes on the ground (you will see squiggly lines on either side of him just before he poops). Getting him onto the toilet in time will fill up his Happiness meter.
The Icon after that one is the Game Icon. You go here to play games, shop, enter Passwords, view Souvenirs and use Items.
The first choice is Game. When you enter Game when it’s a baby, Jumping Rope will only be available, then at toddler stage Mimic is unlocked! When you play these games they will randomly increase skill points in either Intelligence, Fashion or Kindness. Then in Teen stage Shape, Dance and Flag are unlocked. Playing and doing well in Shape will increase Intelligence skill points; Dance will increase Fashion skill points and Flag will increase Kindness skill points.

The choice under Game is Item. You go here to play with all the items that you have bought at the Shop, or that friends or the King have given you. You can store a maximum of 30 Items in your Item list. Some items are multi-use whilst others are single use. Some items can only be used by adult characters.
Under Item is Shop. You go here to buy toys and treats for your Tamagotchi. The shop usually restocks at 3.00pm and 7.00pm - to restock the shop without waiting so long - change the time to 2.59pm or 6.59pm, wait 1 minute and the shop will be restocked. Don't forget to change the time back! At the shop you can enter the secret Shop Codes as well. For all the 5 V4 Shop Codes, please read this topic by Kyliesmum:

Under Shop is Password. Whenever you get a password from TamaTown, you go here to enter it, to get the prize! The USER NAME you enter on TamaTown to get the passwords MUST match the USER NAME of your tamagotchi - otherwise the passwords will not work. There are however two universal passwords from Tamagotchi Corner Shop 2 DS game that work on all V4s. Please read this topic for more information on this:

Last is Souvenirs! You go here to view all the Souvenirs you brought back from TamaTown!! This topic by Spudilike shows the V4 souvenirs, and where/how you can get them on TamaTown:

The last symbol on the top is the Connection Icon. You go here to connect your Tamagotchi with another one, take it to kindergarten/school/work or to TamaTown! The first choice is Work - when your Tamagotchi is in kindergarten or school or has a job, select Work and he or she will go off to TamaTown to either learn or slave its poor life away.
Note: after selecting work and the AWAY screen appears - push button B to interact.

You can earn a maximum of 30 GPs per day playing the school game if you choose the correct box every time (10 games @ 3 GPs per game).

The next choice is PC. If you want to go to TamaTown simply go here and pick PC to get a log-in password. You input your Username, and this code into TamaTown to gain access. You can also use this screen to generate your own V4 passwords using D-Best's method:

After PC is Ver 4. Use this screen if you want to connect with another V4 tamagotchi - this will allow you to play games, give a present or visit the other Tamagotchi on their screen. You both must select the same option. To connect with another version Tamagotchi, instead of V4, you use the Others option.
The Icon on the bottom left is the Discipline Icon. You go here to give Tamagotchi Time Out when it beeps for no reason. Or a Praise if it beeps at you and its crying. Tamagotchis need emotional support too you know!! This topic by GK1 gives a good explanation on how to get training bars:

The Icon after that is the Medicine Icon, go here when Tamagotchi needs Medicine if it is sick, or you gave it a toothache by feeding it too much candy (bad you).
The next Icon after that is the Mail Bag Icon. When Tamagotchi gets mail you go here to read it. The Star Mail is a fortune cookie. It will rate 3 different subjects by stars - 1, 2, or 3 stars. The more stars the better. This Star mail will tell you how healthy your character will be that day, how well it will get money and how well it makes friends with others. The second mail choice is a Letter! Random stuff happens here! You may get a letter from the King and get something really nice! Or you may get a letter that you’ve been burglarized and will lose money. Sometimes some idgit with no life will send you a pile of poop or a snake. That will lower all your happy hearts (so lame). The last mail choice is Event Mail . You only get these when you are notified to go to kindergarten, to school, if you’ve graduated school, or are getting offered a job. You get one as a Toddler for you to go to kindergarten. You will get another one when it’s a Teen that’s telling you you graduated Kindergarten and right after that you get another one telling you that you can go to regular school. This is the fun part! You get to choose which Teacher you want. When you get the Teacher letter for your teen and you go to TamaTown to get the teacher: The Turtle teacher will appear there. By playing the school game with him you get to incraese Intelligence points! Push button B to select him. If you want to raise Fashion (Arts) or Kindness (Social) points instead, press A as soon as the Turtle guy comes on the screen. This will scroll you through to the next teacher which is Ms. Flower. She will raise Fashion (Arts) points. If you want to raise Kindness (Social) points press A one more time and Mr. Canvas will appear. The canvas guy increases Kindness (Social) points! If you let a certain teacher Idle there for 5 seconds and you don’t press any of the buttons, you will be forced to get that teacher. This is the same with jobs. After you receive [!] mail telling you that you have graduated school, you will receive more [!] mail offering you a choice of jobs. You can pick which job you want by scrolling through the choices with button A. If you want to see what each building is when you are picking a job you can check viewtopic.php?t=96 out! The next Icon is the Friend List Icon! Go here to view all your friends under the Friend option. You can also go here to wrap presents to give friends or throw away presents too by using the Present option! You can donate points to the King and view how many you have donated under the Point option. Under Family, History will show all your Tamagotchi you have had that have died. Parent will show the last 3 generations of parents of your tamagotchi. This section will also give you Cell Phone codes to call your parents and grandparents!
The last Icon is the Attention Icon . It lights up when Tamagotchi calls for you. If you see this lit, check to see what it needs (taking to the Medicine icon; filling of Hungry/Happy hearts or training) and take care of it as needed.
